Shepparton born and bred, Sam is part of the legendary Victorian Furphy family, renowned for beginning one of Australia’s oldest company’s and producing the famous Furphy Water Cart which led to the term “a Furphy” becoming part of the Australian vernacular.

As a fifth generation Furphy, Sam joined the 137 year old family business in 1993. Furphy’s Foundry is highly regarded for manufacturing and supplying a robust range of street and park furniture to local Government and Landscape architects throughout Australia. It was during this time that Sam saw the opportunity to venture out on his own and build a new Furphy Legacy.

In September 1995, funded by $7,000 savings and using the kitchen table for an office, Sam founded Urban Maintenance System’s (UMS) which is now one of Australia’s Leading Facilities & Infrastructure Maintenance organizations providing a diverse range of services to Government and private sector organizations across the country. Employing over 350 staff working from 17 locations

Ultum Pty Ltd is a newly established business specializing in the provision of Asset Management Services providing a suite of upstream FM and Asset Management Services.

Sam prides himself on creating a positive and productive work environment for his staff, which he treats more like family than employees. Sam’s approachable nature and down to earth attitude helps make him a positive and dynamic leader which has certainly contributed to the overwhelming success of the business he leads.

Despite Sam’s professional success he maintains a good balance between work and play. Being a country boy at heart, when he is not maintaining our cities and buildings he enjoys family holidays in the Aussie outback with his wife and three sons, Cycling, fly fishing and playing the Guitar.
