Shepparton born and bred, Sam is part of the legendary Victorian Furphy family, renowned for beginning one of Australia’s oldest company’s and producing the famous Furphy Water Cart which led to the term “a Furphy” becoming part of the Australian vernacular. As a fifth generation Furphy, Sam joined the 138 year old family business in 1993 after a 4 year stint as a sales and marketing executive in the automotive industry.

In September 1995, Sam founded Urban Maintenance Systems. Under Sam’s dynamic leadership Urban Maintenance Systems has grown to a 70 million dollar a year company employing over 350 staff working from 16 locations. After 16 years as CEO, Sam has taken on a new role at Urban Maintenance Systems as Chairman of the UMS Advisory Board. Sam’s other responsibilities include Chairman of Furphy’s Foundry, Director of Ultum and Director of NuGreen Solutions.

Ultum is a newly established business specialising in the provision of building condition, compliance and NABERS rating services to property managers, facilities managers and building owners. NuGreen Solutions is an innovative company offering cost-effective solutions for property owners to switch from inefficient high cost traditional lighting to more efficient LED lighting without the high upfront cost.

Despite Sam’s professional success he maintains a good balance between work and play. Being a country boy at heart he enjoys family holidays in the Australian outback with his wife and three sons.
